Crafting, recycling and schematics
Benches, recipes, quality, recycling and where schematics come from.
Open Crafting from the field kit. Recipes show what they need, where they can be made and what's missing. You can use the station you're standing at, or any station within a few meters.
Stations
- By hand: basics like rag bandages, torches, crude weapons and sandbags.
- Workbench: tools, walls, melee weapons and repairs. Haven's workshop has one, and you can build your own.
- Armory bench: guns from parts, ammunition, attachments and the Gunsmith tab.
- Med station: medicines and antivirals. There's one at Haven's clinic.
- Electronics bench: radios, circuits and suits.
- Campfire or stove: cooking and boiling water.
- Bloomery and crucible furnace: charcoal, metal and cast lead. See Wood, stone and metal.
- Spinning wheel, floor loom and tailor's bench: yarn, cloth and clothing. See Cloth, wool and leather.
- Threshing floor and grain mill: grain and flour. See Farming and crops.
Skill and quality
Crafting is a skill. The more you make, the more recipes open up, and some also need another skill, such as Medicine for antivirals. Gear comes out Crude, Standard, Fine or Masterwork. A short timing check during the craft can lift it a step, and missing it never ruins the item. Good materials, such as pristine hides, make better gear.
Recycling
Break down junk you don't need for parts. The recycler at Haven's workshop charges a small fee, and the scrapyards at Joshua Road, Rogers Salvage and the Paleto sawmill are free but loud and exposed. You can build your own recycler, which runs on fuel cans or batteries. Guns break down into barrels, springs and weapon parts, which keep your other guns alive. Contaminated loot has to be washed first.
Schematics
Some recipes need a schematic. Schematics aren't sold. They're found in the world: in loot, deep in Blackzones, on elite infected, and as rewards for work. Use one to learn its recipe for good. Locked recipes give a hint about where their schematic turns up.
Some story steps ask you to make something. Those recipes appear with a STORY badge when the time comes.
