Wild mushrooms
Where they grow, telling them apart, and the ones that kill.
Mushrooms grow on natural ground in the forests and hills: the Paleto forest, Chiliad, Cassidy Creek, Tongva, Braddock and the like. Look at a patch and choose Pick it, or cut oyster mushrooms off a stump. Patches grow back after about six hours, and everyone shares the same ones.
Know what you picked
- Porcini, parasols and oyster mushrooms are good eating. Oysters grow on wood, never out of the soil.
- Morels are honeycombed and hollow. Cook them, because raw morels make you sick.
- Fly agaric is red with white warts. It makes you stagger and vomit for several minutes.
- Death cap has a pale greenish cap, a skirt on the stem and a cup at the base. Read the item before you eat anything.
Death cap
Death cap poisoning is the cruel one. You feel nothing for about eight minutes, then you're violently sick, then you seem to recover, and then your liver starts to fail. It can kill you, and nothing you carry treats it. The only cure is not eating it.
A trader at Haven buys good mushrooms and sells dried ones.
Real foragers never eat a mushroom they can't name for certain. When in doubt, sell it or leave it.
