Cameras and photographs
Disposable and print cameras, developing film, what a photo is worth, the missing-persons wall and the archive.
Every photograph you take is real: the picture you framed, kept on the server. Hand a print to someone and they see the same picture. It stays in your pack, in a stash or on your body until it's torn up.
Two cameras
- Disposable camera: 27 exposures, a fixed lens and a small flash. The pictures stay on the film until it's developed, in the darkroom at Haven's clinic.
- Print camera: a digital camera with a printer in the grip. It zooms, focuses by itself and prints a small photo on a sheet of photo paper straight away. With no paper loaded, the shot waits on the card. It runs on a battery or a power bank, about 90 shots a charge.
Taking a picture
- Use the camera from your inventory to raise it to your eye. LMB takes the picture and Backspace lowers the camera.
- On the print camera, the mouse wheel zooms. Hold RMB to lock focus, then move the frame. R opens the card.
- H sets the flash to auto, on or off. A disposable's flash reaches about 3 meters. At night, the infected see a flash from across the street.
- A photo is judged the way a real one is. It needs the subject big enough in the frame and near the middle, in focus, in enough light, and a steady hand. A running target at dusk will blur.
The darkroom
Take a finished or part-used disposable to the clinic at Haven and use the darkroom there. Every frame comes out as a print. Bring a Darkroom Kit, or pay 15 scrip for the clinic's chemicals. You can also reprint any photo there, for a sheet of photo paper. You can brew a kit over a fire from coffee, wood ash, vitamins, salt and boiled water.
What photographs are worth
- Haven's clinic buys photos of the infected and the worst of them. The rarer the thing, the more it pays, and the Codex page for it opens.
- Haven's trader buys photos of patrols and convoys. It's intel for Haven, and Haven remembers who brought it.
- A trader who deals with hunters buys photos of the animals you rarely see, and pays well for the rarest.
- The first photograph of anything that anyone brings in pays double, once, and everyone hears who took it.
- Your best photo of each subject goes into Field photos, a book at the bottom of the L Codex.
The missing-persons wall
The notice board by Haven's inner gate is for finding people. Pin a print of another survivor with a note saying where they were last seen. Only a photo that really shows them can go up. A pin stays up for a week. If you're on the wall, you can take your photo down and keep it.
Settings > Discord > Photographs & privacy: switch off "Others may pin my photo" to keep yourself off the wall. Switch on "Post my best photos to Discord" to let your sharpest shots go to #screenshots. A photo that shows other survivors is only posted if all of them have that switch on too.
