Wood, stone and metal

Logging, mining and Geology, smelting, gold panning and the table saw.

Logging

Look at a tree and Fell the tree, then Buck the trunk into rounds, and Take a log round. Split rounds into firewood and kindling with an axe. A felling axe is the fastest axe. A chainsaw is more than three times faster, but it's heard about a hundred and forty meters away, where an axe carries about forty-five, and the crash of the tree carries seventy. Use the chainsaw from your inventory to check it and top it up from a full jerry can. Worked too hard it seizes, and a workbench can rebuild it.

  • An oak gives six rounds, a pine four and a birch two, and birch often gives bark as well. Fallen trees give seasoned rounds that are quicker to cut.
  • A log round weighs fifteen kilos. Bring a vehicle.

Mining

The Davis Quartz quarry has stone, copper and iron, and the Tataviam mine has coal, galena and gold-bearing quartz. Look at a face, Look at the rock to see what it is, then work it with a pickaxe. Each face gives out after a few strikes and comes back after an hour or two. Mining and panning train Geology, which raises your yield.

Smelting

  • A Bloomery turns firewood into charcoal, and with charcoal turns iron ore into steel rod, copper ore into copper, galena into lead, and sulfur rock into sulfur.
  • A Crucible Furnace casts lead into bullet heads, lead shot and weights, and melts gold flakes into a nugget.

Gold panning

Wade into shallow water and use a Gold Pan. Cassidy Creek, Raton Canyon and upper Zancudo are where the gold is. Anywhere else you'll rarely see color. Buy a pan from the trader at Haven or make one at a workbench.

Table saw

A Table Saw cuts log rounds into hardwood planks or firewood much faster than by hand. It needs power, and it's loud. See Power, doors and furniture.

Noise is the real cost of all of it. Fell and saw by day, keep a lookout, and don't run a chainsaw on the edge of a nest.
