Settlements and colony survivors

Haven and the other settlements, and the people who live with you.

A settlement is a place people live. Haven and the faction strongholds eat, drink, burn fuel, grow, argue and sometimes fail, whether or not you're watching. Open Settlements in the field kit to see how each one is doing, what's been happening there, and who's on the road to its gate.

Notice boards at Haven, Paleto Hold, the Sanctuary and the Port say what's going on and what each place needs. Look at one to read it.

Survivors in the world

You'll find strangers out there: trapped, wounded, besieged or just lost. Look at one with ALT to help them or talk. Someone you've helped may follow you home. They can work at your base as a guard, a cook, a medic, a forager or a mechanic, if you give them a bed.

Your own community

The people who live at your base become a community. They need three meals a day, water, medicine and a safe wire. Name a leader, set the rations, and keep the stores stocked. Open Colony ledger from the Settlements page for jobs, beds and stores. The colony stores themselves are kept at Haven, by the board.

  • Well fed, well defended and well led, a community flourishes, and newcomers who hear about it walk up to the wire.
  • Short on food or water, frightened or leaderless, morale sinks, and the unhappiest people leave.
  • People can be hurt or die. Losses are permanent.

Named people in the world can die for good too. When a trader or a service role is lost, someone new eventually takes their place.
