Cloth, wool and leather
Cotton and fleece to yarn and cloth, knitting, and sheepskin coats.
Cloth is made the old way, step by step, and every step is a recipe in crafting.
Cotton
- Gin cotton bolls by hand to get ginned cotton.
- Card it with Hand Carders, made at the workbench.
- Spin carded cotton into yarn on a Spinning Wheel. Yarn also twists into thread.
- Weave yarn into Cloth, or a lot of it into Canvas, on a Floor Loom.
Wool
- Shear a sheep for a Raw Fleece. See Animals and homestead.
- Wash it in the Scouring Tubs with water and soap.
- Card it, then spin it into wool. One fleece makes four wool.
- Weave wool into cloth on the loom, or knit a warm sweater by hand with Knitting Needles.
Sheepskin
Tan a sheepskin on the Tanning Rack with salt and tanning liquor. Three tanned sheepskins, leather and thread make a Shearling Coat at the Tailor's Bench, one of the warmest things you can wear.
Every step is slow by hand, the way it really was. Keep a stock of yarn and thread so a torn coat doesn't wait on a week of spinning.
