Traps and live capture
Snares, cage and box traps, bait, and the bear trap.
Traps catch what really lives nearby. Set one where animals move, leave it, and come back later. A freshly set trap catches nothing for the first eight minutes, and you can keep up to eight set at once.
- Snare Wire kills rabbits and sometimes a hen, a cat or a rat. It needs no bait. A snare that held something is often kinked, and then the wire is lost.
- Cage Trap takes a rabbit, hen, cat or rat alive. Bait it with carrot, cabbage, lettuce, apple, wheat, oats or wild berries and it catches about twice as often.
- Hog Box Trap takes a young boar, which you dispatch at the trap, and sometimes a rabbit or hen. Bait it with corn, apple, potato, wheat or oats.
Bait comes out of your pockets when you set the trap, and you get it back if nothing took it. Anyone can empty any trap, but only the owner can pick the trap up.
Live catches
A live catch goes into your pack as a Live Rabbit or Live Hen in a sack. Put it in a hutch or hen house to keep it (see Animals and homestead), or use it from your inventory to dispatch it for small game. Don't leave it too long: an animal dies after eight hours in a trap or twelve in a sack, and a dead catch left in a trap is taken by scavengers.
Bear trap
A bear trap is for the dead. It snaps shut on the first infected that walks into it, hurts it badly and holds it for about twelve seconds. Look at a sprung trap and choose Reset and pick up the jaws.
Real trappers check their lines every morning. The longer a catch sits, the worse it gets.
