On the radio

A handheld radio is the second thing every survivor should find, after water. Haven talks on it, the traders sell on it, people die on it, and some of what you hear is a lie. Turn the dial and listen. Sound only plays when you press play.

There are other stations. Some you'll only hear much later.

Batteries

A radio drains 1% a minute while it's on, so a fresh cell gives you about a hundred minutes. Turn it off when you're walking.

Parts

An extended antenna opens shortwave. A signal decoder reads encrypted traffic, like Blackmere's tactical channel and the numbers station. Use the part with a radio in your pack to fit it.

Distress calls

Every 12 to 22 minutes someone calls on 121.5 from contested ground. The call stays open for 20 minutes. Get there, get them out, and everyone who helped is paid.

Who to believe

Every station has a reliability. Haven's band is almost always right. Rust Radio is right less than half the time. What you hear goes into your signal log, and you learn who to trust.
